Lauterbrunnen, the terminus of the BOB, is
the starting point of the Wengernalp Railway
and the Lauterbrunnen-Mürren Mountain Railway. The latter is divided into two
parts: a funicular from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and a metre-gauge
adhesion railway from Grütschalp to Mürren. Both sections of the route were
opened in 1891. The high-altitude railway is 4.3 km long with a turn-out in
the middle and was electrified in 1891, using 525 V direct current. Three
four-axle railcars handle the traffic providing service every 15 minutes.
Since the railway has no direct connection to the rest of the network, the
vehicles are kept in repair in a small workshop on the Grütschalp. The
entire line offers an overpowering view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley to
Wengen and the mountain chain comprising the Eiger, Mönch and the Jungfrau.
